Al Alvarez, Poker Celebrity!

Al Alvarez was born in London 1929. Alvarez was educated at Oundle School and Corpus Christi College, Oxford where he took his first degree in English. During the late fifties and sixties, Alvarez was a poetry critic and editor for The Observer and later became a poet and novelist. He is the author of many non-fiction books on topics ranging from suicide, divorce, and dreams to poker. Some of Alvarez's most famous novels are:

• Night
• Offshore
• Feeding the Rat
• Biggest Game in Town

Alvarez's 1962 poetry anthology The New Poetry was hailed at the time as a fresh departure. Janet Malcolm completed a study, The Silent Woman - Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, whereby she analyzed relationships between Al Alvarez and Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. Later, Alvarez was portrayed by Jared Harris in the 2003 film Sylvia, which chronicles the troubled relationship between Ted Hughes and his wife Sylvia Plath.

Recently, Alvarez wrote Poker: Bets, Bluffs and Bad Beats (2000), and his autobiography Where did it all go right?.
